Google AI Misleads Woman into Hunting Snipes Illegally

A Kodiak woman was fined $150 after being misled by Google's AI instructions on snipe season. According to a citation filed at the Kodiak district court, Christina Weaver called Alaska Wildlife Troopers to self-report the violation on September 5.

Weaver had searched for 'Snipe season' on her phone and received incorrect information from Google that snipe season began on September 1st. Based on this, she hunted three snipes but became suspicious when she learned that duck season didn't open until October 8th. Snipes are small game birds common in Alaska, Canada, and the northern Lower 48.

Trooper Alex Wick performed a Google search identical to Weaver's and received the same incorrect information. He noted that once Weaver realized her mistake, she contacted dispatch to turn herself in.
