Google AI Overviews Slash Website Clicks by Nearly Half
New research from the Pew Research Center reveals that Google's AI Overviews are significantly reducing website clicks. When an AI Overview appears, the click-through rate to other websites drops to around 8%, compared to 15% when no AI Overview is present. This represents a nearly 50% decline in traffic. Even more striking, only about 1% of AI Overview sessions result in a click on a cited source, indicating that most users find their answers directly within the AI summary.
Separately, SparkToro estimates that zero-click searches, where users get their answers without leaving Google, now account for roughly two-thirds of U.S. Google searches. This trend, while not new, has been accelerated by AI Overviews. Google has disputed some aspects of the research, but independent sources confirm the broader pattern of declining click-through rates when AI summaries are present.
The shift towards zero-click searches doesn't necessarily mean bad news for businesses. While fewer clicks may occur, being cited favorably within an AI-generated answer can still influence decisions. The challenge now is to optimize for visibility within AI answers rather than just chasing clicks. This requires a focus on citation, credibility, and accurate representation, as fewer users will click through to verify information.
Businesses should adapt by measuring success beyond clicks alone, building credibility that AI systems trust, and ensuring accurate structured data. This includes leveraging earned media, consistent business information, and strong review signals to maintain visibility in an evolving search landscape.
