Google AI Researcher Warns Humanity May Be Running Out of Time to Prevent Catastrophic Outcome
Bilal Chughtai, a senior AI safety and alignment researcher at Google DeepMind, has resigned from his position due to concerns that humanity may be running out of time to prevent a catastrophic outcome. He believes that AI has the potential to wipe out humanity and announced that he had moved to BlueDot Impact, where he will work on training people in technology safety.
Chughtai's departure follows that of Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic and OpenAI, who last week accused the labs of making a 'wild gamble with human lives' in a blind race toward superintelligence. Other industry leaders have also echoed warnings about AI risks, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who published an unusual manifesto calling for a slowdown in development to prevent a loss of control.
However, some cybersecurity experts have expressed skepticism and ridicule towards these scenarios, arguing that they ignore the existence of basic security safeguards such as sandboxing, firewalls, and incident-response systems. They claim that an AI agent escaping from a closed environment is not the awakening of malicious consciousness but a basic failure of security architecture and permissions management.
