Google Aids Fact-Checkers with New AI Tool Against Disinformation
Google's DeepMind has developed an AI tool called Backstory that helps fact-checkers verify the authenticity of images. The tool is currently being tested by journalists, OSINT experts, and librarians as part of Google's Trusted Testers Program.
Backstory uses a combination of AI agents to determine whether an image is AI-generated or manipulated. It can also conduct reverse image searches and trace the history of an image online, providing context for its usage. The tool's primary purpose is to aid fact-checkers in debunking false images circulating on social media.
India Today, a major news organization in India, has been using Backstory as part of their fact-checking workflow. According to Bal Krishna, the lead fact-checker at India Today, Backstory is used as a 'quick reference' tool that provides context and direction for verification work.
The development of Backstory comes amidst growing concerns about AI-generated imagery being used to spread disinformation. Google's DeepMind has contributed to the rise of AI image generation through its model, Nano Banana, which has been criticized for contributing to online scams and disinformation.
