Google Analytics 4 Tackles Generative AI Traffic Attribution

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) has introduced a new feature that classifies traffic from generative AI assistants, such as ChatGPT and Gemini. This update addresses a critical gap in traffic attribution, allowing marketers to track AI-assisted sessions alongside organic search, email, and paid campaigns.

The GA4 AI Assistant channel now recognizes AI-originated referrers explicitly, extending the Default Channel Group taxonomy. This automatic classification logic overwrites default channel assignments when a session's referrer string matches a recognized AI assistant platform.

Marketers can now compare AI-driven engagement with other channels using existing reports, providing new signals for optimizing content and conversion paths for a distinct audience segment.
