Google and Cathay Pacific Tackle Aviation's Contrail Conundrum with AI
Google and Cathay Pacific Airways have teamed up to tackle one of the aviation industry's most pressing climate issues - contrails. Contrails are the white plumes that trail behind aircraft at high altitudes, composed of frozen water vapour attached to engine exhaust particles.
While they may look picturesque, contrails trap heat and contribute significantly to aviation's climate impact. In fact, Google estimates that contrails account for roughly one-third of the industry's total climate effect.
To mitigate this issue, Google has developed an AI-powered solution that combines predictive models, satellite imagery, and weather data to identify areas where contrails are more likely to form.
The system suggests altitude adjustments to flight planners and crews, allowing them to avoid these areas and reduce the warming effect of contrails. According to Google, early-stage trials on several dozen Cathay routes achieved a 40% decline in contrail-related warming effects.
Cathay Pacific is the first airline partner in Asia-Pacific to test this technology, and it marks the first global trial of contrail avoidance on ultra-long-haul flights. While the solution shows promise, Google's research lead project manager Kemal Armada notes that wider-scale implementation will require addressing regulatory requirements, airspace restrictions, and airlines' operational considerations.
A second phase of the trial is set to begin this week, expanding to intra-Asia, transpacific, and polar networks. The goal is to gather more data on where contrail avoidance works best - and where it doesn't.
