Google has announced a major collaboration with Constellation Energy to boost nuclear power capacity in the U.S. The partnership will add 890 megawatts (MW) of clean, reliable nuclear energy to the PJM grid by modernizing six existing plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. This initiative will support nearly 4,400 existing jobs and create approximately 7,200 new construction jobs. Google’s power purchase agreement (PPA) with Constellation marks the company’s latest effort to enable over 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of new nuclear capacity in the U.S., enhancing grid stability and economic opportunities without additional costs to ratepayers.

The project involves nuclear uprates, which upgrade turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems to increase the power output of existing reactors. Google’s role as the anchor customer provides Constellation with long-term revenue certainty, allowing for necessary upgrades across 11 reactors. By the end of 2032, these upgrades will deliver significant clean power to the PJM grid, which serves 13 states and 67 million Americans. The collaboration also includes deploying Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise to optimize plant operations, accelerate planning, and streamline construction.

Google’s commitment extends beyond this deal. The company is working on similar projects in Georgia, Iowa, and Tennessee, aiming to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s goal of expanding domestic nuclear energy by 5 GW by 2030. In Georgia, Google is partnering with Georgia Power to add new capacity and unlock system-wide energy savings. In Iowa, the company is collaborating with NextEra Energy to restart the Duane Arnold Energy Center, bringing over 600 MW of carbon-free power online. Additionally, Google is partnering with Kairos Power and the Tennessee Valley Authority to deploy advanced nuclear reactors in Tennessee.

Through these efforts, Google is building a portfolio of nuclear partnerships that bring reliable clean power to local grids. The company’s long-term approach aims to scale the deployment of clean firm technologies, ensuring a more affordable and sustainable energy future for all.
