Google and Fervo Energy Ink Historic Geothermal Power Deal
Google has partnered with Fervo Energy in a historic deal for geothermal energy. The agreement, announced on September 1, involves a 396-megawatt power purchase between Google and Fervo Energy. This is the largest enhanced geothermal power purchase to date.
Fervo's Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) technology uses horizontal drilling to generate geothermal energy wherever hot rock can be found. The company has been working with Google for years, including a pilot project in 2021 and a previous agreement in June 2024 for 115 MW of power.
The deal is significant because it validates Fervo's EGS technology and demonstrates its ability to meet the baseload power demands of AI data centers. The partnership brings Fervo Energy one step closer to operating commercially, with commercial operations expected to begin in 2028.
