Google and Gates Pour $100 Million into AI for Smallholder Farmers

Google and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have joined forces to increase the number of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia who benefit from their artificial intelligence tools. The program, which received $100 million in combined funding, aims to expand its reach from 50 million to 200 million farmers.

The initiative leverages Google's Agricultural Understanding Platform, which provides data on plot boundaries, crop types, planting and harvesting periods, and weather alerts tailored to specific regions. This information will be used to improve the accuracy of farm monitoring and target public interventions and financial services more effectively.

Part of the funding will also support CGIAR's work on developing drought-, heat-, and disease-resistant crop varieties. Additionally, the partners plan to integrate AI forecasts into TomorrowNow, a climate platform supported by the Gates Foundation, the UK, and Google.org.
