Google Backs Swedish Green-Steel Project with Hydrogen-Based Steel Mill

Google has partnered with Stegra to support the development of a green-steel mill in Sweden, which will use hydrogen made from renewable electricity and water to produce steel with near-zero emissions.

The partnership helps address challenges facing both green steel companies and data center developers. Metal-makers need early customers like Google to help generate interest among investors, while tech companies require cleaner construction materials to mitigate their growing environmental impact.

Google's emissions rose 18% from 2024 to 2025 due to increased use of steel, concrete, computing hardware, and other materials for data centers. The company will procure 'environmental attribute certificates' from Stegra's first year of production, which will allow it to count emissions reductions associated with a ton of Stegra's steel toward its own sustainability targets.
