Google Backs Swedish Steel Producer on Zero-Emissions Plant
Google and Swedish steel producer Stegra are partnering to bring the world's first large-scale, green hydrogen-based, near-zero emissions steel plant online.
The project, located in Boden, Sweden, aims to meet the International Energy Agency (IEA) definition for near-zero emissions steel production by harnessing renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This green hydrogen is then reacted directly with iron ore to produce iron, emitting primarily water vapor instead of carbon dioxide.
The partnership highlights how corporate investment can accelerate the development of transformative clean technologies and reshape global supply chains. Google will receive environmental attribute certificates (EACs) corresponding to a portion of the steel produced during Stegra's first year of operations, with the tech company committing to purchasing certificates for up to 91,000 metric tonnes of steel.
