Google Backs West Virginia Solar Project With Long-Duration Energy Storage
Google has partnered with MN8 Energy and Eos Energy Enterprises to build a large-scale solar project in West Virginia that pairs lithium-ion and zinc-based long-duration energy storage. The 'Mammoth Solar' project will generate 86 MW of electricity, with 70 MW/280 MWh of lithium-ion storage and 10 MW/100 MWh of Eos Energy's Z3 zinc-based LDES system.
The project, which is being built on a reclaimed coal mine site, is designed to convert intermittent solar generation into a dispatchable resource. Google will purchase the energy, capacity, and clean energy attributes of the project under a long-term agreement.
The Eos Z3 system is designed to provide 10 hours of discharge duration, extending the availability of solar generation beyond the shorter-duration lithium-ion storage in the portfolio. This marks Google's first project using Eos' Z3 technology.
