Google has expanded its Google Beam initiative in partnership with the USO, bringing lifelike 3D video connections to 20 global locations. This program allows deployed service members to experience intimate, real-time interactions with their families, bridging the emotional distance of military service. The expansion follows a successful pilot program earlier this year between Trzebień, Poland, and Fort Bliss, Texas, and now includes sites like Grafenwöhr, Germany, and Fort Hood, Texas.
A new docuseries directed by military veteran Kyle Hausmann-Stokes highlights the impact of Google Beam on four military families. The series captures moments such as Sergeant Amoy Brown celebrating his wife Tiyanna Orane’s military promotion and interacting with their son, Azeal, despite an eight-hour time difference. For Army Chaplain Roland Kassales, the technology allowed him to experience his daughter Blythe reading her stories to him in real time, complete with body language and eye contact.
Other families, like the Jennings, benefited from seeing newborn Lilly and hearing sister play guitar, while Major Michael Rodriguez witnessed his one-year-old daughter Kathryn take her first steps. The docuseries aims to showcase how Google Beam is redefining human connection for military families separated by deployment.
