Google Blasts AI Chips into Space for Harsh Reality Check

Google is pushing its artificial intelligence (AI) chips to new heights - literally. The tech giant plans to launch a prototype satellite next week aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 to test its TPU AI chips in low Earth orbit.

As part of Project Suncatcher, Google aims to put its AI chips through rigorous testing to ensure they can withstand the harsh conditions of space, including cosmic radiation, extreme temperatures, and launch forces. The company is working with SpaceX and Planet Labs on this endeavor.

The tests will also assess whether radiation can flip bits and corrupt data, which could have significant implications for the development of AI systems in space. Google has already been testing its AI chips in lab conditions at UC Davis, but it needs real-world data from actual orbit to validate their performance.

To address the unique cooling challenges posed by space environments, Google is developing heat-pipe and radiator cooling solutions, as air cooling doesn't work in a vacuum.
