Google Brings Markdown Support to Docs and Drive
Google has introduced a new feature that allows users to view, edit, and collaborate on Markdown files directly within Google Docs and Google Drive.
This update means that Markdown files no longer need to be converted into Google Docs format to be edited or shared. The feature preserves all Markdown formatting, making it easier for users who prefer this lightweight markup language for writing and formatting documents.
Markdown is popular among users who favor keyboard-driven formatting over complex menus, and its integration with Google Docs is expected to benefit those who use large language models (LLMs) like Gemini for drafting documents.
Google Drive now also supports previews of properly rendered Markdown files, complete with clickable links, headings, and structured data like tables. The rollout of this feature is gradual and may take up to 15 days to reach all users with a Google Workspace or personal account.
