Google Challenging $425M Verdict Over Mobile User Privacy
Google has taken its first step in appealing a $425 million verdict from a 2020 lawsuit alleging the company violated mobile users' privacy.
The class-action lawsuit, which dates back to 2020, claimed that Google's Analytics for Firebase code collected data about app usage even after users toggled off their 'Web & App Activity' setting.
Lead plaintiff Anibal Rodriguez and others alleged that this collection of data was highly offensive and a breach of privacy.
In September, a jury found Google liable for two related claims: 'intrusion upon seclusion' and 'invasion of privacy', assessing damages at $425 million.
Google has asked the court to vacate the verdict, arguing that determining whether a privacy violation is highly offensive requires a person-by-person analysis.
