Google Chatbot Blamed for Hiker Rescue After Mount Shasta Misadventure

Three young hikers were rescued from California's Mount Shasta after using Google's artificial intelligence chatbot, Gemini, to plan their expedition. The incident has raised questions about relying solely on AI for outdoor adventure planning.

The hikers began their hike at 3am but failed to follow guidance advising them to turn back if they hadn't reached the summit by noon. Instead, they continued and eventually reached the summit at around 7pm, leaving them to begin their descent in darkness.

They later contacted the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office for directions but ended up spending the night in Mud Creek Canyon. They were rescued the following morning by Forest Service rangers and volunteers.

The sheriff's office reported that Gemini had advised the hikers to carry significantly less food and water than they ultimately needed, which contributed to the multi-day ordeal. Authorities stressed that AI should not replace expert, local guidance when planning mountain expeditions.
