Google Clarifies Why Ranking Updates Often Precede Official Announcements

Google's John Mueller shed light on why ranking updates are preceded by fluctuations in rankings. SEOs often notice that their websites' rankings start going up and down days or weeks before an official announcement of a Google update.

Mueller explained that the fluctuation is not due to any intentional rollout of updates beforehand, but rather because Google tries to announce updates as close as possible to when they actually happen. He noted that this can be challenging due to time-zone differences.

This phenomenon has been observed by SEOs for years, with some even creating dedicated threads to discuss perceived ranking fluctuations. However, Mueller pointed out that these fluctuations are often just a natural result of the constantly changing online landscape.

He emphasized that Google does not have updates every day or month, and that most fluctuations can be attributed to trending topics, viral articles, and news that influence search results.
