Google Close to $1 Billion Nuclear Power Deal with Constellation
Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., is closing in on a major deal to purchase nuclear energy from Constellation, according to a Bloomberg report. The agreement, potentially worth over $1 billion, could be finalized this week. This multi-year contract underscores the growing urgency among tech giants to secure reliable power sources for their expanding data centers.
The deal comes as the surge in artificial intelligence (AI) and data-center demand revitalizes interest in nuclear power. Nuclear energy offers consistent, emissions-free electricity, making it an attractive option for companies aiming to reduce their carbon footprint while meeting rising energy needs.
Google is not alone in this pursuit. Last week, Amazon struck a similar agreement with Constellation to buy 690 megawatts of nuclear power, including capacity from the Calvert Cliffs nuclear facility in Maryland. Google has also secured nuclear power deals with NextEra Energy and Southern Co., highlighting its commitment to expanding nuclear capacity.
The resurgence of nuclear energy reflects broader industry trends. After facing setbacks earlier this decade due to safety concerns and high costs, nuclear power is now gaining traction as governments and companies seek sustainable solutions for increasing electricity consumption.
