Google Closes 449 Suspected Korea-Influencing YouTube Channels

Google has cracked down on 449 Korean YouTube channels in the second quarter of this year, which it believed were systematically trying to influence public opinion by dealing with Korea-related content.

The Google Threat Analysis Group (TAG) released its 'Second Quarter 2026 Impact Work Report' on June 31st, revealing that a total of 449 Korean YouTube channels were blocked between April and June this year.

In May alone, a record 367 channels, or 81.7% of the total, were closed ahead of the local elections on June 3rd. Of these, 142 channels were criticized by the Korean government, while 71 received government support, and 53 simultaneously criticized the government and certain political parties.

Google judged that these channels engaged in 'non-authentic coordination' by using multiple accounts to disguise themselves as voluntary individual activities and then intervened in the formation of specific public opinion. However, unlike other countries such as China, Russia, and Iran, detailed information about the country behind the scenes, operating entities, and channel names was not disclosed for the Korean channels.
