Google Takes Down 449 Korean-Language YouTube Channels for Coordinated Influence Ops

Google has taken down 449 Korean-language YouTube channels for engaging in coordinated influence operations aimed at manipulating public opinion. The channels were blocked as part of Google's efforts to combat misinformation and inauthentic behavior on its platforms.

The majority of the channels, 367, were taken down in May, which coincided with the run-up to the June 3 local elections in South Korea. Of these, 142 had criticized the government, while 71 supported it, and 58 backed specific politicians.

Google determined that the channels had engaged in 'inauthentic coordinated behavior,' deploying multiple accounts to disguise organized activity as spontaneous individual expression. Unlike similar operations linked to China, Russia, and Iran, Google did not disclose the state actors behind the Korean-language channels or their operators.
