Google Cloud Surges Ahead as Amazon Web Services Loses Market Share
The second quarter results for Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud have been released. Both companies reported significant growth, but Google Cloud outpaced its competitors with a revenue increase of nearly 82% and operating income growth over 200%. Alphabet's cloud business also gained market share, while Amazon lost it.
Data from Synergy Research Group shows that Amazon Web Services had a 28% share of the worldwide public cloud revenue in Q2, down from previous years. Microsoft's share peaked in early 2024 and is now at 20%. Google Cloud, on the other hand, continues to grow its market share, reaching a new record of 15% last quarter.
The dollar figures tell an even more telling story. Google Cloud revenue grew by over $11.1 billion, almost matching Amazon Web Services' net growth of nearly $11.4 billion. This shift in market share may be even more significant than the actual numbers suggest.
