Google Cloud Surges Past Amazon in Q2 Revenue Growth
Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud both reported significant growth in their cloud computing businesses in Q2, but it's Alphabet's Google Cloud that is gaining market share at a faster rate.
In contrast to AWS' 28% of global public cloud revenue, Google Cloud now accounts for 15%, according to Synergy Research Group. This shift in market share may seem small, but the dollar figures tell a different story: Google Cloud's revenue growth exceeded $11.1 billion, almost matching Amazon Web Services' net growth of nearly $11.4 billion.
While AWS still dominates the cloud computing market, investors are taking note of Alphabet's growing presence. The fact that Google Cloud offers a range of business-facing services, including email and office productivity software, may give it an edge in terms of user familiarity.
The AI spending frenzy is expected to continue for now, but once it cools off, the marketability of cloud computing service providers will become even more important. Alphabet's Google Cloud seems well-positioned to compete with its bigger competitors in this space.
