Google is collaborating with artist Sanford Biggers to create a massive outdoor sculpture for its Chicago headquarters. The 30-foot-tall Vector will be composed of glazed terra cotta panels and inspired by 19th-century quilt patterns.

Biggers, a Los Angeles-based artist who earned his master's at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1990s, said he chose quilts because they 'are sort of the repository of American culture.' He worked with local institutions to ensure the sculpture's patterns reflect the state's history.

The Vector will be set near where Jean Dubuffet's Monument with Standing Beast once stood. It is expected to be completed next year and join Downtown Chicago's public art collection, which includes works by Picasso and Miró.
