Google Cracks Down on Android App Memory Usage Amid Global Shortage
Google has introduced stricter guidelines for Android app memory usage to combat the global memory shortage. This is in response to smartphone manufacturers reducing memory capacities and increasing costs due to supply constraints. Developers have until February 2027 to optimize their apps to reduce memory footprint, as excessive consumption can lead to slowdowns or crashes.
The new rules aim to ensure smooth performance on devices with lower memory capacities. Google has specified three key areas for optimization: dynamic memory usage, bitmap memory usage, and DEX code. Developers must implement smarter memory management, use bitmaps responsibly, and clean up redundant code by at least 25% before publishing.
This move is part of a broader effort to support customers by improving the experience on existing hardware. Microsoft has also committed to optimizing Windows 11 for devices with 8GB of memory to reduce pressure on users to upgrade.
