Google Cracks Down on Competition as Smartphone Dominance Grows
Google's dominance on US smartphones is more pronounced than ever, according to recent data from Comscore. The tech giant owns six of the top 15 most-visited apps on mobile devices in the country, with YouTube leading the pack at an impressive 176.7 million unique visitors and a reach of 75%.
The numbers show that Google's grip is not only extensive but also growing. Social media apps' share of time spent on mobile phones has been declining, dropping to 41.4% in July from 46.5% in April, the steepest three-month drop since Apptopia began tracking it in 2023.
This trend is expected to continue as Google extends its distribution advantage into AI. The company's AI Mode now reaches a staggering 1 billion monthly users, and analysts predict that Google's AI chatbots will close within roughly 1 million users of ChatGPT by the end of this year.
