Google Cracks Down on Sideloading with New Identity Checks
Google has begun enforcing its new sideloading rules in four countries ahead of a broader rollout planned for 2027. The Android developer identity checks are now mandatory at seven app stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Users on devices running Android 7 or later will need to enable a new setting in Developer options and wait 24 hours before installing third-party apps from unverified developers.
The advanced flow aims to reduce scams through malicious apps by requiring users to verify the identity of the developer behind a third-party app. This is an early step towards Google's plan to expand verification globally to all apps on certified devices in 2027. However, it remains unclear whether direct web downloads will be covered under this new policy.
Rahim Amir Noorali notes that this move marks the end of freedom on Android, as users will now face additional steps and a wait period for installing third-party apps from unverified developers.
