Google Data Center in West Memphis: WMU Reassures Customers on Utility Bills
West Memphis Utilities (WMU) has responded to public concerns surrounding its role in Google's $4 billion data center project in West Memphis, Arkansas. According to a release from WMU, customers will not see an increase in utility bills due to the development of the data center.
The company stated that it carries a responsibility to protect the interests of existing customers and keep them informed as the building effort continues. 'Our responsibility is first and foremost to the customers we serve,' said Bob Atkins, General Manager of WMU. 'We can welcome new economic development to West Memphis while also making sure our existing customers are protected.'
WMU emphasized that its infrastructure and project in West Memphis are separate from Entergy Arkansas' agreements, operations, and regulatory affairs involving data center customers.
The commission noted that one electric line remains to be constructed for the Google data center. However, WMU confirmed that Google has made payments to cover the costs of the utility infrastructure needed to serve its facility.
