Google Data Center Plan Sparks Outrage in Hermantown Amid Environmental Concerns
A contentious Google data center project in Hermantown, Minnesota has sparked heated debate and protests from local residents. The group 'Stop the Hermantown Data Center' attended a city council meeting on Monday, clad in red attire to express their opposition.
The group's member Jim Klukkert claimed that Governor Tim Walz hasn't been supportive of their cause and that the state needs a full moratorium on data centers. He stated, 'We're going with colors, we're going with red, we're going with buttons, and Hermantown leads the way. It's all downhill from Hermantown.'
In an effort to address concerns, Google representatives presented updates on the project's environmental impact. The new design aims to reduce noise levels to 47 decibels, equivalent to the sound of an ancient refrigerator, which is below the state requirement of 50 decibels.
Additionally, Google claims that their revised plan will have a 37% less impact on local wetlands compared to the original proposal. However, public commenters continued to voice their dissent, with one person pointing out that Google only made these changes in response to public pressure.
