Google Data Center Tax Incentives Approved Amid Community Concerns
Wayne County commissioners have overridden a veto to approve tax incentives for Google's proposed data center in Van Buren Township. The project, worth over $2 billion, would cover roughly 280 acres of land along Haggerty Road.
The county executive, Warren Evans, initially vetoed the decision due to outstanding concerns and what he saw as a rushed vote. However, the commissioners argued that the project will provide jobs, fund county-wide projects, and lower local residents' water bills.
Residents near the site have expressed concerns about environmental impacts, noise, traffic, and falling property values. Chris Hort, who lives directly across from the site, said it 'feels like an invasion.'
The Van Buren Township Planning Commission will review the final site plan on October 14.
