Google Data Center to Bring Billions, Jobs, and New Homes to Columbia County
A new study by the Columbia County Economic Development Authority estimates that Google's data center campus in Appling, Georgia will generate $4 billion over 35 years for the county. The study also projects 1,600 new jobs, 472 new local households, and 307 new students in the Columbia County School System. This is based on research of similar facilities.
The land currently generates $22,000 a year in taxes for the county and schools. However, the county's projected tax revenue from the site is $12 billion. Google has signed a $280 million deal with Columbia County, which will be paid over seven years to fund homestead property tax relief.
Homeowners would receive an $18,000 credit for each home if voters approve the tax break in November. The Development Authority is lobbying Georgia lawmakers to amend a cap that would allow a full property tax credit in the future.
