Google DeepMind Suffers Brain Drain as Top Researchers Exit

Google DeepMind has suffered a significant brain drain as four of its top AI researchers left the company in one afternoon. Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, will be stepping back from day-to-day operations to become Alphabet's chief scientist and chairman.

Hassabis believes that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is 'close at hand' and will spend more time on Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's AI drug discovery arm. Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's longtime CTO, takes over as senior vice president and reports directly to Sundar Pichai.

The departures include Jeff Dean, a Google Senior Fellow who co-built the infrastructure behind MapReduce, BigTable, and Spanner, and Sanjay Ghemawat, another top researcher. Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le also left DeepMind, with Vinyals being the VP of Research at DeepMind and a technical co-lead of the Gemini model family.

This is not an isolated event, as it's part of a larger trend in the AI industry. Many top researchers are leaving Google for startups like Anthropic, which offers pre-IPO equity and a more attractive culture. Hassabis says he has 'total confidence' in Kavukcuoglu to lead DeepMind, but the company still faces significant challenges.

The Gemini 3.5 Pro model is still delayed, and some employees are citing low morale as a reason for the slow releases. Google's position in the AI market once looked dominant, but the departures of top researchers may be changing that.
