Google DeepMind Unveils AI Tool to Revolutionize Human Genome Understanding
Google's DeepMind has developed an AI tool called AlphaGenome Atlas that aims to revolutionize our understanding of biology and accelerate scientific research. The platform contains a 'predictive map' of every possible DNA letter change in the human genome, covering around nine billion potential single-letter substitutions.
The researchers claim that Atlas can help scientists figure out which genetic mutations matter and how they affect the body at a molecular level. The tool uses AlphaGenome, an AI model developed by DeepMind last year, to make predictions about how each of the nine billion variants could affect the body.
To help researchers sift through the vast amount of data, Google is releasing a Variant Impact Score (AVI) that draws on the company's other models for predicting the effects of DNA changes. The AVI will allow scientists to rapidly rank variants and interpret their molecular effects simultaneously.
DeepMind's genomics lead, Ziga Avsec, acknowledged that the underlying model had already been released but said turning its capabilities into a genome-wide catalog took time due to the vast size of the dataset. Atlas is available for non-commercial use through Google's website starting today and will be available for commercial use on Google Cloud 'soon'.
