Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis Hands Over Reins as Company Shifts Focus

Demis Hassabis, co-founder of Google's AI unit DeepMind, has shifted his role from CEO to Chair and Chief Scientist at Alphabet. This change marks a significant shift in leadership for DeepMind, which was acquired by Google in 2014.

Hassabis has been instrumental in DeepMind's breakthroughs, including developing AlphaGo, which mastered the Chinese board game Go, and AlphaFold, a program that predicts protein structures. His departure from day-to-day duties has sparked concerns about the future of AI research at DeepMind.

Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over as Senior Vice-President of DeepMind, but some former Google employees see this move as a sign that DeepMind is being brought under tighter control by its parent company. Hassabis has stated that he wants to focus on the 'big picture' for AI and believes he's handing over operational management to someone well-equipped for the competitive battles ahead.
