Google DeepMind's Leadership Overhaul Sparks Stock Decline
Alphabet's GOOGL stock fell about 4% on Wednesday after the company announced a major leadership overhaul of its artificial intelligence division, Google DeepMind.
The restructuring comes at a critical time for Google DeepMind, as it prepares to release its Gemini model. However, the flagship version of Gemini is still unreleased despite an expected June launch, fueling concerns among investors that Google is losing ground to rivals Anthropic and OpenAI.
Demis Hassabis, currently CEO of Google DeepMind, will transition to a new role as Alphabet's chief scientist while also becoming chairman of Google DeepMind. Koray Kavukcuoglu will assume day-to-day leadership responsibilities as senior vice president, retaining his role as Alphabet's chief AI architect.
The departures add to a broader talent shift within the AI industry, with several prominent researchers leaving Google for other companies. Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le have left Alphabet to establish Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on machine learning research.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai outlined the rationale behind the move, stating that Hassabis would put his full attention on actively shaping the future of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
