Google Deploys Satellite Prototype in Space to Test AI Infrastructure
Google has launched its first satellite prototype built with Planet Labs aboard a SpaceX rocket as part of Project Suncatcher, an effort to explore deploying machine-learning infrastructure in space. The immediate goal is not to build orbital data centers but to test the reliability of Google's custom AI chips, Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), in space.
The project aims to gather in-orbit data on how TPUs handle physical stress and radiation extremes over several weeks. This testing will determine whether Google's AI chips can function reliably in harsher environments than terrestrial data centers. The launch is part of a long-term research effort, and investors should not treat it as a near-term revenue catalyst.
The project also coincides with SpaceX developing its own plans for orbital computing infrastructure. Alphabet has an additional exposure to this effort through its stake in SpaceX, valued at over $82 billion.
