Google develops Face Active Illumination to fix low-light face unlock
Google is developing a new feature called "Face Active Illumination" aimed at improving face unlock functionality in low-light conditions. The discovery comes from code found in the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1, suggesting that the feature will allow users to control brightness levels and specify when the illumination should activate.
The code reveals toggles for various scenarios, including dark environments, bedtime, driving, and Do Not Disturb mode. However, it remains unclear whether the feature will use infrared (IR) technology or simply adjust the display brightness to enhance facial recognition.
While the feature was partially activated, the user interface appeared incomplete and lacked clear labeling. Google has not officially announced "Face Active Illumination" or its relation to the rumored Project Toscana, which is also focused on improving facial authentication across its devices.
The feature's exact implementation and final marketing name remain uncertain, but the code suggests it will offer users greater control over how and when their device illuminates their face for unlocking purposes.
