Google Ditches Classic Assistant for Gemini AI

Google is removing the option to use its classic Assistant on devices across the US and Europe. The company has already begun phasing out the choice between its older helper and Gemini, a new AI-powered platform.

The change was announced in 2025 but accelerated this year. As part of the transition, users who update their primary app will no longer be able to toggle back to the classic Assistant as an alternative. This includes paired accessories like Wear OS smartwatches, wireless earbuds, and car dashboard systems.

Drivers are particularly unhappy with the switch, citing concerns that Gemini is distracting while on the road and sometimes ineffective for simple tasks. The new AI system has filled online forums with complaints from users who find it difficult to adapt to its conversational approach.
