Google Ditches Gemini Gems for Reusable Skills in Phased Rollout

Google is phasing out Gemini Gems in favor of more flexible and reusable Skills. The transition will occur in stages, starting with the rollout of Skills on October 5 in Google Workspace and October 13 in the Gemini app.

Skills are built on open standards using Markdown, making them portable across compatible platforms. They can capture a company's brand voice, templates, processes, and other reference material, allowing for reusable building blocks. Multiple Skills can be stacked to tackle complex tasks.

Business and enterprise accounts will not lose Gems before March 1, 2027, while education accounts will retain them until June 1. Remaining Gems will eventually be converted to draft Skills.
