Google Ditches Gemini Gems, Replaces with New Skill Feature
Google has announced a plan to replace Gemini Gems with Skills across all its platforms. The transition will begin on October 5, 2026, when Skills start rolling out in Workspace. By mid-November, Skills are expected to be fully implemented in Workspace.
The rollout of Skills in the Gemini app is scheduled for October 13, 2026. The company has also announced that Gems will move to the Settings panel of the Gemini app on November 17, 2026. Users can still create, edit, and use Gems until then.
On March 1, 2027, business and enterprise users will no longer be able to create or use Gems in the Gemini app. The company will also remove any remaining Gems from the Settings panel. Flows in Workspace Studio with the Ask a Gem step will stop working, and any remaining Gems will be auto-migrated to draft skills.
The same transition will occur for education users on June 1, 2027. Skills do not sync between the Gemini app and Workspace, so users must create them separately if they want to use them on both platforms.
