Google Dives into Space with First AI Satellite Launch
Google has launched its first satellite as part of an ambitious plan to place artificial intelligence in space. The prototype satellite, part of Project Suncatcher, lifted off from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Thursday aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission.
This marks a new frontier for AI computing, as Google aims to create orbital data centres by leveraging abundant solar energy. According to Maria Biggs, director of engineering at Google, 'Project Suncatcher is a simple idea: How can we efficiently scale AI infrastructure, through orbital data centres by leveraging the abundant energy that we can get from the Sun.'
The launch has sparked concerns about the risks of space debris and light pollution. SpaceX boss Elon Musk has proposed launching up to 1 million satellites for his Starlink internet network, which already controls over 11,000 operational satellites.
