Google Docs and Drive add full native support for markdown files
Google Docs and Drive have introduced full, native support for markdown (.md) files, a move driven by the growing use of markdown in the AI era. Previously, Google's support for markdown was limited, often requiring files to be converted into a format compatible with Docs. Now, users can open, edit, and collaborate on markdown files directly within Google Docs without changing the file type. This update also supports real-time editing and comments with full rendering of markdown formatting.
Google highlights that this enhancement benefits AI use cases, such as enabling AI agents to collaborate on documents and sync with Gemini Notebook. The update ensures users can work with fully formatted documents, including clickable links and structured tables, directly in Google Drive. Chandu Thota, a Google representative, noted that markdown has become a common language between humans and AI agents.
The rollout of markdown support in Google Drive and Docs began today but may take up to 15 days to reach all users. The feature is enabled by default, even on admin-controlled accounts, making it widely accessible.
