Google Dominates Data Centre Rankings with AI-Driven Infrastructure

Google has topped Data Centre Magazine's Top 250 Data Centre Companies list for 2026, thanks to its cutting-edge infrastructure and sustainable practices. The tech giant runs the systems behind Search, YouTube, Workspace, Gemini, and Google Cloud, but its influence extends far beyond these products.

Custom silicon and machine learning-driven cooling are used inside Google's data centres, while the company's Open Compute Project contributions have improved industry-wide efficiency on rack power and cooling. The fleet averaged a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.09 in 2025, beating the Uptime Institute survey average.

Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) are custom chips that have been in production for over a decade, powering Gemini. The company has also agreed to supply multiple gigawatts of TPU hardware to customers through Google Cloud. Amin Vahdat, SVP and Chief Technologist for AI and Infrastructure at Google, says 'by customising and co-designing silicon with hardware, networking, and software, we can deliver dramatically more power efficiency and absolute performance.'

Google has also made significant investments in Finland, announcing a €13bn (US$14.7bn) investment across 2027 and 2028. The expansion will support Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube. Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, says 'we're proud to deepen our roots in Finland.'

Through its open-source contributions, sustainable cooling operations, and massive capital expenditures, Google continues to set the benchmark for AI computing infrastructure and decarbonisation.
