Google Drops Support for ChromeOS in 2034, Promises Upgrade Path
Google has announced that it will stop supporting ChromeOS in 2034, but has promised to provide an upgrade path for many devices to its new Googlebook OS. The company's first Googlebook laptops from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are set to launch next month.
The ChromeOS platform will continue to receive updates and security patches through mid-2034, with qualifying devices that exceed this date receiving a transition path to Googlebook OS. However, management tools for IT professionals won't be available until the second half of 2027.
Googlebook OS is built on Android and offers native app support, as well as core security features such as sandboxing, verified boot, and automatic updates. While many newer Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS, the company hasn't yet revealed which models will be supported or how the upgrade process will work.
