Google Enabling Native Checkout for Some E-Commerce Platforms
Google has begun sending email notifications to Merchant Center users whose e-commerce platforms support the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). The notification informs them that their products are now eligible for native checkout, which allows customers to buy directly in Google Search using AI Mode or on Gemini.
This feature was launched in February, but it appears that more retailers have been enabled over the past week. UCP-powered checkout lets searchers purchase products using Google Pay and the UCP integration announced in January.
According to an email received by Menachem Ani, to be eligible for native checkout, products must be published on a Shopify storefront and available in Merchant Center. Eligible products are automatically included.
If merchants prefer customers to buy directly from their website rather than Google, they can disable the feature in their Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic.
