Google Engineer's Leap of Faith: From Software Engineering to Cybersecurity
Prerit Pathak, a 28-year-old security engineer at Google in New York City, made a career pivot from software engineering to cybersecurity. He shares his story of how he transitioned into this field and offers advice for those looking to make a similar change.
Pathak's interest in cybersecurity started as a kid when he would jailbreak his devices to enhance their capabilities. However, he initially pursued a career in software engineering at Dell Technologies in India after completing his undergraduate degree.
Despite being a software engineer, Pathak had always been fascinated by the art of navigating edge cases and questioning assumptions, which is a key aspect of cybersecurity. He eventually found a vulnerability on a public website and reported it to the management, receiving appreciation letters and acknowledgments from top universities and organizations for disclosing critical vulnerabilities.
Pathak's experience in software engineering provided a great technical foundation for his career in cybersecurity. He also set up a local chapter of the Open Worldwide Application Security Project, a cybersecurity nonprofit, while working at Dell. This further solidified his interest in the field.
