Google Expands Backup Power Capacity in Fort Wayne Data Center
Google's Fort Wayne data center is expanding its backup power capabilities with a new request to install 228 additional diesel generators. The proposed generators would serve as emergency equipment in case of regional electrical grid failures, according to Google.
The company expects the facility to add about 200 jobs as operations expand over the next several years. Google has already received approval from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for a permit package that includes 140 emergency generators, five smaller generators, dozens of diesel fuel tanks, and nearly 50 cooling towers.
Some area residents have raised concerns about the scale of the project, with some questioning the amount of equipment proposed during an IDEM hearing in November. Google says it will maintain records of generator operation and emissions to demonstrate compliance with state and federal environmental requirements.
