Google Expands Backup Power Generation at Fort Wayne Data Center

Google is expanding its backup power generation capabilities at its Fort Wayne data center in Indiana. The company has applied for an air permit modification to add 228 more generators, bringing the total number of backup generators at the site from 34 to 262. This increase represents a nearly fivefold expansion of the existing generator capacity.

The new generators will run on ultra-low sulfur diesel or renewable alternatives, according to Google. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management approved an initial request in April to boost the number of backup generators from 34 to 179.

The Citizens Action Coalition has expressed concern over the expansion, describing it as a 'massive expansion' of the backup diesel generators.
