Google has expanded its contrail avoidance trial to the Asia-Pacific region in partnership with Cathay Pacific, the world's fastest-growing aviation market. The goal is to reduce the warming impact of contrails, which account for one-third of aviation's total climate impact.

The trials have already shown promising results, with an estimated 40% reduction in contrail-related warming over 80 flights. Cathay Pacific will be testing contrail-avoidance routes on ultra-long-haul flights, using Google's satellite imagery analysis and AI predictions to pinpoint areas where contrails are likely to form.

The system brings together various data sources, including weather intelligence and satellite imagery, to provide dispatchers and pilots with actionable insights. This allows them to adjust flight altitudes slightly to steer clear of cold, humid atmospheric zones where contrails are likely to form.
