Google Faces UK Regulatory Pressure Over Search Engine Dominance
Alphabet's Google is facing new regulatory pressure in the UK as competition authorities propose giving Android and Chrome users more choice over search engines, including AI assistants.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has suggested that Google provide users with a choice of search providers when they initially set up an Android phone or open Chrome. This would also involve asking users to pick a default provider annually.
The regulations aim to increase transparency in search rankings, allowing AI assistants that meet technical and security standards to appear alongside traditional search services. The CMA is also pushing for clearer attribution of publishers, so users can see where results come from and access the original material.
These proposals are part of a consultation process that remains open until October 9, with a final decision likely by year-end.
